Patty Cake Like You’ve Never Seen It: A Sermon Illustration

I have seen and used many illustrations to try to help others understand Christian community, sometimes referred to as body life. You know, the connectedness between believers taught in texts such as Ephesians 4:16

He makes the whole body fit together and unites it through the support of every joint. As each and every part does its job, he makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

or Romans 12:4-5

Our bodies have many parts, but these parts don’t all do the same thing. In the same way, even though we are many individuals, Christ makes us one body and individuals who are connected to each other.

You’ve probably heard the metaphors as well – families, teams, symphonies, couples, dancers, choirs – all examples of people united and in sync for a greater purpose as Christ calls and describes His church, many acting as one.

But I’ve never found an illustration quite as innovative as the one I’m suggesting with this post. Watch the clip below and tell me that’s not the greatest patty cake demonstration you’ve ever seen, and a neat little example of body life when you’re looking for one you haven’t used before. Amazing.
