Friday Fives: The Top Five Underdogs

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37

But God chose what the world considers nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose what the world considers weak to put what is strong to shame. 1 Corinthians 1:27

Don’t you love it when the odds are against someone and they overcome? And how God must delight in that?

That’s the subject of this edition of Friday Fives – five victorious folks I loved learning about. And I think you will too.

#5 – Fisher of Men

The Story: Clay Dyar is a professional bass fisherman despite the fact that he’s been told over and over again that he can’t do it. That’s why he’s an overcomer and that’s why he starts off this edition of Friday Fives.

#4 – When You Fall

The Story: It was 2008 and Heather Dorniden was running in the 600 meter finals race at the Big Ten Indoor Track Championships for the University of Minnesota. With a lap to go and leading the pack, the star runner fell and fell hard. The race for her was over…

…not so fast.

#3 – When You Lose

The Story: Malik Stewart lost the Minnesota 3A state championship high school wrestling match to St. Michael Albertville’s Mitchell McKee. Mitchell said, “I prayed ‘God help me win this match’ so I can go win a state title for my dad” McKee did win, Stewart lost. But it was what Stewart did next that finds him in the third slot on this week’s Friday Fives.

#2 – Life Without Limbs

The Story: Nick Vujicic is an evangelist with a powerful story as you’ll see. He was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder in which a person is born with no limbs. But that hasn’t stopped Nick. He brings a message of hope to hundreds of thousands each year.

#1 – The World's Ugliest Woman

The Story: 25 year-old Lizzie Velásquez has an extremely rare medical condition. She is unable to gain weight – she has never weighed more than 64 pounds despite a calorie intake of 5000 calories per day.  She is blind in her right eye and has only limited vision in the other. Her immune system has been significantly compromised. And, as you’ll see, she is a big winner in Christ.
