Friday Fives: The Top Five Father’s Day Short Films You Can Use

As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him. Psalm 103:13

But if you don’t want to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Even if you choose the gods your ancestors served on the other side of the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you live, my family and I will still serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

People have all kinds of experiences with fathers – from the wondrous to the tragic to the profoundly sad. But, no matter what your experience, you can honor the dads on earth who are giving their all to do it right. And, of course, always celebrate your Abba Father, who loves you more than you can imagine.

So, on this edition of Friday Fives, the top five Father’s Day- or fatherhood-related shorts you can use in your preaching and teaching. Please purchase the clips of your choice from their providers if you plan to use them.

#5 Guil Castro: I Loved Her First

The Long and Short of the Short: This is a very simple amateur production combining the country group Heartland’s #3 song from 2006, I Loved Her First, along with scenes from the 1991 film Father of the Bride. It’s on the list because both the song and the movie are likely to evoke poignant memories in your audience. The familiarity of both and the combination of the two are what put the clip on this list.

#4 Steven Curtis Chapman: Cinderella

The Long and Short of the Short: I’m sure you are familiar with the tragic story of Steven Curtis Chapman’s adopted daughter Maria. On May 21, 2008 she was killed when her older brother Will didn’t see her running toward him as he was driving into the driveway. Just a year before, Steven had recorded the song, Cinderella as part of his This Moment album.  The song was written about Maria and her sister Stevie Joy, both of whom were born in China.

So, to use the 2007 video clip at #4, combined with the story of Maria’s passing and the Steven’s faithful response to her death, can bring a very powerful message. As the Chapmans endured that season in their lives, they truly walked their talk.

#3 Skit Guys: Fatherhood

The Long and Short of the Short: The SkitGuys are Tommy Woodard and Eddie James. They’ve actually been best friends since high school, a friendship which comes through in their work. Their videos are often powerful and legitimately funny.

The short at number three is legitimately funny and touching. These guys are good.

#2 Igniter Media - Daaaad

The Long and Short of the Short: The short at number 2 is another original from Igniter Media. While it certainly isn’t as “deep” as some of the other shorts on the list, it is playful and poignant at the same time.

#1 The Skit Guys: A Dad's Legacy

The Long and Short of the Short: Another original from the Skit Guys, this one is cute, but it’s also very touching, particularly for those whose Dad is no longer around.

Happy Father’s Day!
